Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
Hi,
I'm hoping to find out the year and story behind my Otca. Thanks so much!

Steve

Hi, Peter

The Ruch canoe is fabulous. I've had it out only twice, once solo the Friday before Thanksgiving and then a few weeks ago with my boys (12 and 15). I'm surprised how fast it is for a 15 footer, and of course without a keel and with a bit of rocker it's very maneuverable.
I had it here at church in our narthex a few weeks ago. I purchased the canoe specifically for the solo portion of a trip I'm starting May 21 that kicks off my 3.5 month sabbatical. We're doing a "per mile pledge" fund raiser for my three week solo in the BWCA and two more with a friend in Quetico. Everyone was amazed that I will actually be paddling it, thinking it's "just to pretty to use".

Thanks for asking about it, Peter. Happy paddling!

Steve

The Old Town canoe with serial number 85568 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between October, 1924 and August, 1925. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on August 10th, 1925 to Great Barrington, Mass. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Off topic, but we will be in Quetico the first week of June. Would be happy to share a cup and a fire.

That would be great, Dave. Where are you headed and how long will you be in? The "second leg" of my trip (the two person trip after my three week solo in the BWCA) starts June 12 with a Falls Chain entry. If possible it would be fun to try and pinpoint a date and location for a rendezvous.

Hi, give me a pm, or email. Dave osborn is the group leader/aka canoe Sheriff. I think we are entering at Beaverhouse someting or other.
