Penn Yan paint

I kind of know what the colors are like. But is there still somewhere I can look at original Penn Yan colors. Something for Cartoppers. Penn Yanboats.com doesn't have any examples on their site to look at. weren't most of them red or green. Maybe I should ask George Kirby?

George (from my experience) records his custom colors by customer name, not canoe manufacturer. It is likely that he might be able to suggest a "standard" color if it's one that is frequently used, but I've never been that lucky.

I've done a lot of Penn Yan boats over the years. I have one now in the shop. Actually, I don't like them to many screws, nuts and bolts.
Some people want the original colors and pin stripes and decals. I've picked up boats where the customer still has the 30 year old penn yan paint can. I'll check with George this week. Thanks, Dave

Sandusky Paints in Ohio replicates colors for many vintage boat companies. Their website doesn't list Penn Yan, but it might be worth a call.

Ok, I guess I didn't know or forgot. There's a Penn Yan Red and a Penn Yan Chinese Red. The Chinese red has a little orange in it. Maybe I'm over thinking it. I wonder which one would have been used on a 1950s cartopper?

I remember using Rustoleum Chinese Red in my childhood, so the 1950s is about right!
Now whether it is right for your Penn Yan, that is a different question....

Hi David,
I’m also doing a 1950s cartopper. I painted it with Kirby’s Penn Yan Green in the fall. My plan is to do the Penn Yan stripe when the weather warms up. I’d be interested to hear what red you go with and see a picture if possible.
Thank you!

Three coats of Penn Yan red gloss. Not the Chinese red. I got it from George. If I had to do the red again, I'd have the primer tinted. Red and yellow are a pain to get to cover nice. I'll put up another photo when I flip it and put the trim back on. Also I put a fiberglass skin on it. Two layers of 6 oz. cloth instead of canvas. That's what the customer wanted. Canvas would have been easier. :( All the glare in the photos is the sun through my paint room windows.
