Workshop event: filling the canvas on Andy Hutyera’s Seliga canoe
When: 10 am, Friday June 27
Where: Jackie Hutyera’s house, 431 St Clair, Cadiz, OH
RSVP: bradleyf8@gmail.com
Hi paddlers,
Andy Hutyera left us with many wonderful memories … fun outings, sage advice, great stories, helpful times in the workshop, and so much more. Even with busy, service-filled lives, he and Jackie managed to have ample time for WCHA.
Next Friday, June 27, is our chance to pay him back.
We’ll be gathering at Andy and Jackie’s home in Cadiz, Ohio, to take one of his last projects a step closer to completion. It’s a rare, sought-after Joe Seliga canoe that’s been canvassed and is ready for filling. As you know, sealing the raw canvas with filler is the first step to waterproofing and protecting the canoe before painting. The Chapter thought it would be fun to fill it as a learning project and a way to remember Andy. He would have appreciated it..
We’ll gather at 10 AM and get to work under the leadership of Craig Johnson, who has ordered traditional canoe filler from Northwoods Canoe. It’s the real McCoy: alkyd oil- and silica-based filler that has been mixed at Roland Thurlow’s canoe shop in Atkinson, Maine. We’ll roll it on, massage it into the canvas with special filling mitts made by Craig’s wife Diane, then apply a second coat. The process will take a couple of hours, then we’ll head out for a group lunch at one of Andy’s favorite restaurants in downtown Cadiz.
Join us for some fellowship, canoe work, and learning!
Feel free to RSVP directly to me so I’ll know how many donuts to bring.
See you next week!
Brad
