Curious about Wooden Canoes
I believe I'm a member but I couldn't find where etiquette requires I place my first post, so here I am. I used this site to find information on shipping a canoe cross country. I bought a 1985 Old Town Guide 16 a wood and fiberglass model, and I just emailed Kas Transport. I shall see what happens now.

Thank you. Kindred Spirits are hard to find. My friend Dave owns OKC Kayak and has agreed to have it picked up and delivered to his shop. It's a late production '85 Old Town and my first and possibly last wood canoe.
Thanks for the welcome. Very nice site.

Hi Robert, welcome and nice canoe! You mentioned its a first wooden canoe and most likely your last. Let me just say that these things should come with warning labels. I think all of us at some point thought I'll just fix up this one and then years later and many many more wooden canoes, looked back and realized they don't like to be alone. Good luck with this one being your last ha.
Enjoy the adventure. Gary

nice canoe , and one thing , maybe you post from Europe , from France ?
just I saw the roof behind with "tuile canal" as south européan houses

I'm 78 years old and undergoing surgeries so it's a safe bet this is my last. But, I'll need a sail rig, and of course, there's always the need for a cabin with a boat house... And.... OMG I'm sweating. Too late. The only thing I made in 9th grade wood shop was a scale model dugout canoe with an outrigger. I don't remember if I passed the class. But if I had passed, that would have been memorable. So that was my first handmade model wood canoe. I'm building a historical 19th century surveyors camp. So this boat is perfect for that.

The picture was taken near the suburbs of western Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania, USA. The boat is coming to the Midwest. I hope to get it in the water before the heat of the summer season. I'm posting from Oklahoma City, USA. I see the roof tiles. I've seen them in use in Asia. French Indo China. European colonial influence. Thanks for writing, nice to meet you.

So, here's what's happened. I contacted the boat shipper mentioned above, and sent him the info he needed and we have a contract 1300 plus miles for less than 800 dollars. On his schedule, fully coordinated on both ends. Really going smoothly so far. I am really having a good time. I'm going to look for old photos of early government surveyors and see how they painted their boats.
