OT Serial Number

Lost One

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I just picked up an Old Town with serial number 177085 15 that was located in Vermont. The previous owner could not tell me much about it other than he was going to restore it and it was going to be too much for him and he did not have the time to do it right.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 177085 is a 15 foot long lightweight model with a keel. It was built between November and December, 1966. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March 21st, 1967 to Smithfield, Rhode Island. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you Benson. I noticed that description did not mention a floor rack. This one has one. Was that a common option that was added later? I have also seen where they had the floor rack installed with the cross supports up instead of down between the ribs. I could see doing that with half ribs but without them it makes more sense to have a smooth deck that is more locked in and put the cross supports down. Or am I mistaken here with that thinking?

Adding a floor rack after the canoe left the factory was not common but it wasn't unusual either. The cross supports were put on top to ensure that it would always fit in any model. This way a dealer could stock one floor rack for all of Old Town's 16 foot long canoes for example. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.
