The Old Town canoe with serial number 171205 is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel. It was built between June and July, 1961. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 19th, 1961 to Mobile, Alabama.
A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
Thanks Benson. This boat will be getting a new lease on life for use by yet another generation of the same family that bought it back in 1961. Never ceases to amaze me how many WC canoes are hiding down here in the south.
Yes, only an estimated one and a half percent of Old Town's production went to Alabama and the four adjacent states but that still works out to over three thousand canoes. Happy hunting,

New York wins by a wide margin as shown at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/location.jpg and Michigan is number seven with about five percent of the total. It is interesting how some canoes seem to move great distances from their original shipping destination and others don't move at all. There is a canoe now on eBay in California that originally shipped to New Hampshire for example. I moved with a wooden canoe from New England to Arizona for a few years and then back many years ago.
