14’ Old Town Outboard Skiff 05236

In 1962, when I was young, my family bought an Old Town skiff from Pierce Marine in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. After years (actually decades) in storage, I recently took it to the Wooden Boat School and started restoring it in the Small Boat Repair class. Inspired by the progress made there and the encouragement of others, I brought it back to Wisconsin and I’m continuing work on it here.

I uncovered the serial number on the stem, 05236 and have been searching through the OT build database for a match without any luck. I’m hoping that you can provide some guidance. Thank you very much.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 05236 is a 14 foot long Outboard Skiff model with a keel, and a floor rack. It was built in August, 1962. The original exterior paint colors were gray and green. It shipped on August 24th, 1962 to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/pricing-plans/join to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. The skiffs had a different numbering and record set from the rest of their products. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

This looks like a 100% match. Thank you very much, Benson.
In the class at WB School, we took measurements of the skiff, but found that it has lost its symmetry and is twisted toward the bow. Is there any chance that patterns or drawings have been preserved? I would love to know more details about the various models of the skiffs.

No, but one of the other owners at the links below may be able to help. Good luck,

Benson
