Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
Hello,

I live in the Hartford, CT area I am trying to finish off my '28 OTCA and need to find some long lengths of spruce and order or pick up some Epifanes paint.

I know just were to get a 20' section of spruce in NH, but I want to get my boat done a little sooner and don't want to drive 200 miles with a 20ft piece of wood on the car if I can avoid it. Is there anyone in CT that has boat building wood for sale? I will need some eastern white cedar soon as well.

I am trying to find an "OTCA" red paint color, the Epifanes website color swatch doesn't effectively show the colors they offer and Jamestown distributors has shades of red not even on the color swatch. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks everyone
---Ryan

For canoe lumber, there are a couple member-builders in Massachusetts, Dylan Schoezel and Bill Clements, who can probably provide what you need. Contact information is here: http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ma.php

You can also try M.L. Condon (http://www.condonlumber.net/) - they specialize in boat lumber and have warehouses in White Plains and Storm King, NY, and also deliver throughout New England.

Old Town used so many different shades of paint (124 according to http://wcha.org/legacypages/ot_records/) from a variety of manufacturers, that there really is no such thing as "Otca red". Best to just choose the color you like. Epifanes is good paint, and if you call them, they should be able to send you a proper color chart. Personally, I am partial to Kirby's paints for their selection of vintage color and sheen. Marshall's Cove Paints on the west coast looks to be a good, new alternative for traditional oil-based marine enamels.

Why not scarph them from two shorter lengths??

Hey Ryan,
I've gotten ribs, planks, gunwale materials, fasteners, canvas, caning, ash and spruce parts from Skyler Thompson in Norfolk, CT 860-542-5081. Just finished my 1927 OT and starting on a 1916 "ideal". Would love to compare notes. Regards, Bob Wynkoop 860-324-4586
