Truck bed hitch extender

Has anyone had experience with a pickup truck hitch extender to carry a canoe? I have a Ranger with a 6' bed and can get another 4' with a hitch extender but seems to me there is a lot sticking out. Might work with a (gasp!!) 15' tin Gruxxan but I don't know about a 16' 0r 17' wooden canoe.

Not sure there's any need to extend the hitch backwards; with 6 feet between the crossbars, you should be in great shape. Another option would be to put another crossbar over the cab; you can get Yakima or Thule towers & crossbar to fit your truck. That'll add more distance between crossbars, if you need (want) it.
