Three Rivers Chapter Spar-Building Session

Max Peterson

LOVES Wooden Canoes
The Three Rivers Chapter met on Saturday, March 10th for a wonderful session presented by Ric Altfather on the Bird's-Mouth method of building hollow masts for sailing canoes. Ric gave us a beautifully organized session augmented with multiple pages of data and with samples. All in attendance enjoyed his presentation, asked many questions, and learned a great deal. Several of us are now building, or are most eager to build sailing rigs and to get out on the water as soon as the weather allows. We suggested that Ric might develop this presentation into a "Wooden Canoe" article and perhaps even a program at the Assembly.

Here are a few photos from the mast building event. The first photo is presenter Ric Altfather. The second shows the profile of several examples of mast construction and the third is a shot of our attentive group posing in Max's wonderful workshop.
