Should I buy a 196? Old Town Trapper?

J1973s

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have a chance to buy an old Trapper…not sure if 15’ or 16’. Not sure whether it’s Canvas or fiberglass over the planking. Price is $450…possibly just a bit less. Any opinions? I’m somewhat handy and have the time. Use will be just paddling on small lakes near home. Canoe is four hours from home tho that’s pretty close for a canoe like thi…most local canoes are newer and synthetic.

Sure, the obvious question is does it leak badly? It is a 16 foot long Otca model, not a Trapper if that matters.

Assuming it is canvas and not glass and that it doesn't leak much, I'd guess the price is a good bargain. The distance is a factor. a coat of paint could get a bit more mileage out of it.

Info I read said: very wide beam…#75…extremely stable. Tracks exceptionally…”best to paddle to the other side of the lake…get out…turn the canoe around and paddle back”.

welcome, no need to get out of the canoe to turn around and paddle back. you can turn around in the water.

OK, looks like a solid boat. You are in the right company for good advice and I hope it works out. Look forward to your updates.
