Serial number search

bowake

New Member
Hello folks, I just registered with WCHA and I could use some help. I recently purchased a wooden canoe. There are no plates or labels of any kind but I did find serial numbers. They are stamped on both ends of the boat near bow and stern and they read 28879 18. The canoe is set up for sailing but I'm not sure it was originally built for this. So if you can come up with any information for me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Greetings and welcome!

The Old Town canoe given serial number 28879 is an 18 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade HW (heavy water, or lake vessel) canoe that was completed October 1913 to March 1914, with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, maple decks, maple thwarts, maple seat frames, a keel and a floor rack. It was originally dark green. It was shipped to Philadelphia, PA, on March 30, 1914. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available athttp://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

If you are unsure if your canoe matches these details, please post pictures... and feel free to do so anyway-- we love seeing what other folks have!

Kathy

Kathy,
Thanks for such a timely and thorough response. The gentleman I bought it from wasn't sure if it was an Old Town or not but I'm glad to see that it is.
I'll post pics soon.
Thanks again
