Can someone help me identify the age and materials used to build Old Town Canoe # 174068? Thanks.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 174068 is an 18 foot long Guide's model that was built on the Otca form. It has narrow two and 3/4 inch planking and a keel and was built between June and September, 1964. The 1964 version of the filler was applied which probably didn't contain any white lead. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green and it was shipped on September 14th, 1964 to Dalton, Georgia. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The page at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif describes most of the typical materials and other specifications for your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson, thank you. After you indicated that 174068 was 18' I verified the number as my canoe is definitely 16'. The last number is not clear at either end but is probably a 6 thus the serial # would be 174066. If this is a 16' model pls send the details. Thanks again.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 174066 is a 16 foot long Otca model with narrow two and 3/4 inch planking and a keel. It was built between June and September, 1964. The 1964 version of the filler was applied which probably didn't contain any white lead. The original exterior paint color was dark green and it was shipped on September 23rd or 24th, 1964 to Houston, Texas. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

There are a total of six canoes that are 16 feet long in the 17406x range. The other records are also attached below in case one of them is a better match. You may want to attach some pictures of your canoe and the serial number in both ends. The location where you found it may also help since these canoes occasionally stay in the area of the original shipping destination. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
