I inherited an Old Town Wood Canoe and would be interested in help with the Serial Number. I think it is 130877 18. Thank you!

I'll take a stab at late 1930s-ish, if the number is correct. Someone with the records will be along with more definitive information.

Posting pictures always helps verify it's the right canoe! Besides, we just like pictures of canoes... lol

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 130877 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, special square end paddling model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, half ribs, a keel, outside stems, and sponsons. It was built between November, 1940 and 1941. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on April, 13th, 1943 to Nashua, Iowa. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much. We have had so many opinions. The owner passed away, and we had a lot of questions. Here are some photos. Thank you again. Hopefully, I can sell this rather large item in my garage! Canoe4.jpg Canoe1.jpg

The information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/57/ may help if you plan to sell it. This was written for canoes with two pointed ends but most of the principles will apply. Canoes with a transom usually sell for less so your price range will probably be lower. Good luck with the sale,

Benson
