Hello - Thank you for your great website. I was hoping you could supply informantion from the build record of a 16' Old Town S/N 145656. My dad and his brother are the original owners of this canoe.

Many Thanks - Paul

Old Town 145656 is a 16 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Otca model canoe, finished June-August of 1946. It has open spruce gunwales, a keel, and was originally dark green. It was shipped to Boutells in Chicago, IL, on August 24, 1946. If the Chicago Boutells was the same as the one in Minneapolis, it was a furniture store that carried outdoor furniture and sporting goods as well.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that anyone reading this will join or renew membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy

Thank You

Thank you for the reply. It's wonderful to be a able to see a copy of the original build record. I'll post some pictures when I get home. My dad thought it was purchased at Elmer Olsen's in Minneapolis but did recognize Boutells as being a Minneapolis department store at the time.

The canoe does match the description in the build record. It also has a removable sunburst/slat pattern backrest w/ the Old Town label on it.

On closer inspection, the SN appears L45656. Attached are several pictures.

Sure looks like a dark green cs grade otca to me... And a pretty one. I think the original number was correct. Seems like most Old Town serials didn't start with a letter...

Welcome to the forums, btw. Don't know if you're still in the Minneapolis area, but the Minnesota chapter is planning an informal paddle on Lake Nokomis later in May (the 22nd, I think?) I'm sure you'd be more than welcome to attend.
