Serial Number Please

Lew: It appears this canoe has not traveled far from home. The Old Town canoe with serial number 124424 is a 16 foot long, CS grade, HW model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, thwarts, and seats with sponsons and a keel. It was built between February and May, 1938. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 3rd, 1938 to Cuba, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Al. The fellow who owns this canoe lives near me, but he got it from a friend in Cuba, NY, so it appears that the canoe has lived it's whole life near where it was originally shipped. He is interrested in doing some of the bull work, like stripping off the fiberglass (yuk!), and having me do the structural work ( the usual suspects), plus recanvas, etc. It will be interesting to wrestle with those sponsons.......Lew
