I have recently purchased a wood and canvas canoe SN 46955. It looks like it was made for someone in Baltimore, MD. Any information to assist me in a proper restoration would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and happy paddling,

Sean

The Old Town canoe with serial number 46955 is an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between December, 1916 and February, 1917. The original exterior paint color was bright green. It was shipped on April 7th, 1917 to Baltimore, Maryland. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. There is lots of good information about restoration here and in the books at http://store.wcha.org/Books/ if you haven't seen these already. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson
