We recently received from a friend an Old Town wooden canoe. It needs to have some work done on it to restore it to working condition. We have setup a website to keep friends and family posted on the project.

We would like to add some history of the canoe to the site. We can trace it back to the late sixties or so, but a serial number search and originating location and buyer would be interesting as well. Can you help with the serial number.

Steve: The Old Town canoe with serial number 170073 is a 16 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built between April and June, 1960. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 10th, 1960 to Dempsey's Boat House in Washington, DC. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Thanks Al...

This would fit in with where the person we got the canoe from was living around that time. He lived in Fairfax County in the sixties. It would be nice to see if Dempsey's Boathouse was still around in DC.
