Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have just recently purchased a 17 old town, Appears to be a guide canoe, I would be thrilled to get the build card for this boat. Serial # is 88813. Thanks

You may need to take another look at this serial number since the Old Town build record for serial number 88813 shows a 16 foot long HW model from 1927 and the one with 188813 is a 15 foot long Lightweight from 1973.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Can you confirm the extreme overall length in a straight line and provide some pictures of the inside stems from each end showing all of the serial numbers and the areas around them? The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help with the digits that are hard to read. Which digit is the least clear? Good luck,

Benson

It appears that the middle digit is the least clear and a search of the 88x13 records shows that 88913 is the only 17 foot long canoe in that group. It one shipped to Santo Domingo in 1926 with sponsons, a centerboard, sail rig, and lots of mahogany as shown below. Does your canoe have these? Can you confirm the length and provide some more pictures? This picture of the serial number was a bit fuzzy so a clearer one along with some overall pictures of the interior and profile would also help. Thanks,

Benson
