Ser# 98943-15 Old Town

Hi Paul--

Old Town 98943 is a 15 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade 50# model canoe with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales and a keel. It was originally (guess) dark green! And was shipped to Chicago March 19, 1929. No wood species is specified for trim, but birch and ash are the usual suspects. The scan is attached-- click on it for a larger version.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Kathy,

I believe I have a match.

Attached are pictures of the canoe.

I could tell by the detail of the stem/deck/inwale joint that this was an early Old Town. They did a very fine job on this one and it remains in perfect condition.

You might notice the bondo or whatever it was on the plank inside for repairs along with the tin piece of tin or something.

I just noticed that I have the build record for another canoe shipped the same day to Von Lengerke & Antonie in Chicago March 19, 1929.

Very Interesting,

Paul
