S/N information on #161495

The Old Town canoe with serial number 161495 is a 18 foot long CS grade OTCA with a keel. It was built between January and July, 1954. The original exterior canvas covering was dark red. It shipped on June 14, 1955 to Portland, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

This canoe is currently listed on eBay and doesn't appear to match the build record. I've asked the seller to look again at the s/n and send a digital picture, but have had no reply. My guess is that he thinks I am some sort of canoe-nazi, who patrols eBay looking for sellers to harass. :p

The canoe appears to be an AA grade (looks like mahogany trim to me) HW or Charles River (that's not an Otca deck, and there's no mention of deck-substitution on the build record), and the seats appear to be hand-caned (which would not have been the case in 1955). Also, the canoe just "looks/feels older" than 1955.

I'm not planning to bid... just want to straighten things out, if possible.

on eBay patrol...

What would it be if it were 10xxxx? Could he have misread a 0 for a 6? We all know what old cracked varnish can do with stamped numbers.

I don't think that it is 101495 since that was assigned to a 7.5 foot long dinghy in 1929.

Where is the seller from on ebay?? What could have happened is someone listed the information on ebay with the wrong picture. They may have dozens of canoes and just got confused. That is very possible!! Thanks for keeping an eye out.
