I was searching through the Old Town specifications for the size of their leg of mutton canoe sails and didn't find the answer. I have an original one as described at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=3994 which appears to have a roughly 73 degree angle between the boom and yard. The Old Town notes shown at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=1066&d=1136757320 specify an 83 degree angle for a similar rig. Kevin Martin's sailing canoe has a 153 inch boom and a 150 inch yard. A 73 degree sail for this would have a 150 inch foot, 147 inch luff, a 177 inch leech, and about 73 square feet of sail. An 83 degree sail would be even larger so I'm inclined to stay with the 73 degree design unless anyone else has a better suggestion.
My research also found that the Big Wolf sailing canoes may be newer than I thought. The attached images below show some details and quotes for these from 1947 to 1971. It looks like they had standard 55 square foot lateen rigs instead of the leg of mutton rig.
