Preservative

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi. What is everyone using as a preservative for their canvas these days. Can't get the Armour All clear preservative or the Home Hardware stuff either. By the way, I'm going to be using Korzite for filler. Thanks. Jim

I don't know what Korzite is. In Canada, folks are using zinc naphtenate as a preservative. In the US, there aren't many options. The best option is probably to order treated no. 10 canvas from Northwoods Canoe.

I still get the product Dan is mentioning here at the Home Hardware where I live south of Ottawa? It lists as a wood preservative but can be used on other materials such as canvas, buy the clear version. It now has only 3% zinc naphtenate in it down from the 5% previously but I've had no problems so far.
I spray it on, outside, not on a windy day, and when I know I'll have at least 2-3 days of clear sunny weather. It's horrible stuff to get the smell out of so wear old clothes, and rubber gloves.
Or as Dan suggests buy treated canvas!

Hi. It's too late for the treated stuf as I have already put the canvas on the canoe. What is the name of the product?

Zinc naphthenate is an organometallic compound (a zinc salt of naphthenic acid) primarily used as a wood and textile preservative, a paint drying catalyst, and a rust inhibitor. It is highly valued because it is less toxic and lighter in color than other metal-based preservatives, allowing treated wood to be painted or stained. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

I needed 72" canvas for my recanvas project, I wasn't able to find 72" treated. I wanted to go with something less toxic, so I opted to use Borax and Boric Acid mixed with hot water. I only coated the underside of the canvas. It did not soak through to the topside maybe only halfway which is what I wanted. I only wanted to treat the dead zone between the planking and the canvas I figure the filler will soak into the canvas a bit maybe halfway as well.
So, I'm wondering does anyone know if the products they are applying for rot is soaking through the #10 canvas?
Does anyone know if the products they are using is protecting their canvas from mold & mildew?
Has anyone recanvased one of their canoes after 10 years and seen if the product they are using is preventing rot?
Does anyone know how much their canvas filler is soaking into the # 10 canvas.
