Paint for our Morris

JClearwater

Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
So I've been working on this Morris and it's time to decide on a paint color. I'm thinking of a burnt red for the body and black 3" band along the gunwale and down the stems with a goldish pinstripe between. I'm having trouble finding a burnt red. I don't want orange and I don't want red. It has to be a deep burnt red - hard to explain. I sent a note to George Kirby hoping he would have a suggestion and I'm waiting on his reply. I thought someone here might have an idea. Thanks,

Jim

The Epifanes color chart has a couple of very dark reds, although I don't know if can be called burnt.
I have used this paint and liked it a lot.

Thanks guys. This is very helpful. Dave, if I ever see that boat in person I'm going to have to genuflect in front of it! Perfect paint job. Perfect.

Jim:
This will not help you on your paint, but I am trying to figure out how to use the software package that WCHA has.
I joined the other day and can't seem to get any information as I keep getting a message that I can't post,
I have a Morris canoe that was made in 1905 and would like to restore it but can't find out who to contact for parts.

Jim, Chris has it the easy way I would call them in Thomaston, Me. , have a nice chat and send up a swatch of what you want and they could mix it or advise you what Epi colors to mix to your very specific need . I have mixed lots of Epi and have never had an issue. I did a Kingsbury with a modified Pam Wedd purple/lilac and was really pleased. Custom mixes can be a lot of fun especially when you go to a two tone scheme, and then with some gold.....yowzaaaaa.
Have fun. Dave

So I spoke with George Kirby and he suggested the same thing as Chris P. did above - go to your local paint store pick out a color that is reasonably close and send it to him. It will be a place for him to start mixing. Granted the paint chips at the store will be flat latex wall paint but you have to start somewhere. He has mixed paint for me before. I wanted a very dark blue so he just added black to the blue he had until I was happy. Burnt Red is a bit more complicated.
Attached is a picture of Kirby's See Red paint on a canoe I did a number of years ago. In some light it looks very red, in other light it looks on the brown side.
Thank you everyone for your help. I'm sure we will figure it out.
Jim
