Just acquired this great old canoe with sponsons. Any help finding out the history of this boat would be appreciated. Serial # 113618.
Thanks, great site.

Hi Winola,

Old Town 113618 is an 18' CS (common sense or middle) grade Otca model canoe that was completed February-- May of 1934. It has red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seat frames, a keel, sponsons, and originally had #4 design. The canoe was shipped to Andover, NJ, on May 10, 1934. A copy of this record is attached below; click on it to get a larger image.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Here is a discussion regarding design #4, which can also be seen on a thirties Otca on the 2011 WCHA calendar, still available through the WCHA store (at a marvelously low reduced price for something with such great pictures):

Sounds like a nice canoe!
