We recently purchased this canoe; it is all original, except for replaced blade on rudder. The canoe is dark red, has letter 15 following serial number, and also include sails/poles, "sablizer fins?" and original oar with decal; would appreciate learning more about this particular caneo and some idea as to range of value. We plan to display it in our lodge room at lake cabin. Tks for any info!

Old Town 177882 is a 15 foot lightweight model completed March to August of 1967. It has a keel and outside stems and was originally painted red. A mast seat and step were installed at the factory but no other sail rigging is mentioned on the build record. Sometimes additional parts for a sailing canoe were added at the local dealership. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that anyone reading this will join or renew membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

I forgot to add that the canoe was shipped to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on August 7, 1967-- which would be her official birthdate!

Attached are a couple pictures that may be helpful. The sail rigging is more descriptive in the '57 catalog than the '67... and the '67 shows your canoe in a humorous portage-situation.

These images are courtesy "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection, 1901- 1993", available on CD from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.
