Can you identify the origin of an Old Town canoe with serial number 151152 16 (or perhaps 51152, as the "1" is very faint)?

It was built with sponsons and floor racks. That might help identify the canoe.

Thanks very much.

Hello-- Old Town 151152 is a 16 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade HW (heavy water) model canoe that was completed May to December of 1948, with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel and sponsons and an original dark green enamel color. No wood species specified for decks/thwarts/seat frames, but they'd be any hardwood except mahogany. It was shipped to the Moosehead Trading Post at Dover-Foxcroft, ME, on 5-25-1949.

My computer is being fussy and won't let me look at 51152, but if this record seems right, it may not be necessary. 51152 would date from a time before diamond head bolts and sheet caning, which would be seen on a circa 1949 canoe-- although diamond-head bolts can be added, and so can different seats... so, the canoe's final destination may be a proving-point. Are you in Dover-Foxcroft? If so, you may know some of our esteemed members! Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy
