Ot 249649-17

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I believe 249649-17 is a 17 foot Molitor.
It has a small brass plate attached on the outside of the hull with the number XTC49649M84B
Any idea what that number means?
I believe it was part of a display at a boat show and purchased when the show ended by Douglas Balfour.
I saw Doug and his canoe at the Greenville Fly In on 9/7/2013.
Thank you for your help

The brass plate is required by the Coast Guard for a hull identification number. The information at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm indicates that was built in September of 1984. Their format limits the serial number to five digits so Old Town simply omits the most significant digits to fit. The scanned Old Town records stop at 210999 so none of us here have any newer information immediately available. You may be able to contact the customer service department at the Old Town Canoe Company and get a copy from their paper records if they are not too busy. Please reply here if they are not able to satisfy your request. The chart at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=24294&d=1360203686 shows that the paper records extend to the early 1990s so yours should not be difficult to locate. Good luck,

Benson

Hi Sandy,

The Molitor model has some interesting history. If you put Molitor into the search box on the right, above, you should be able to locate some old posts having to do with the history of this model and not simply someone's else's specific boat.
