OT 20' Canoe

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi, I have an Old Town canoe, 20' with a serial number of 14042 (or at least that's what I can decipher). I was wondering if you could help me out in determining more information about it! Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Old Town serial number 14042 was on a 17-foot canoe made in 1920, so that would not be the correct serial number. I also checked the Carleton build records because after 1910 the Carleton canoes were built in the Old Town factory and given similar serial numbers. But the Carleton with 14042 was a 17-foot canoe built in 1910.

Please take another look at the serial number. You might try taking a digital photo, especially with a slight angle or side lighting, and posting it to this forum. Sometimes we can figure out possibilities. If the canoe seems older than 1920, there may be another digit hiding. There should also be a slight separation, then two more digits indicating the length. As long as you're taking pictures, a view of the decks would also help.

I apologize, after looking at the canoe again, the number is 141042. Does this make more sense? Thanks a lot! Cole P.

Cole,

Yes, that works better. Old Town canoe #141042 was a 20-foot Guide model with open spruce gunwales, half ribs, and sponsons that was built in 1944-45 and shipped to Fort Kent, Maine, in 1945. Because it was a wartime canoe, it may have had different metals than prior canoes. Its original color was guide special green.
