The Old Town canoe with serial number 196461 is an 18 foot long Otca model equipped with a keel. It was built in 1973-74. The original exterior paint colors were red and black, in OT design # 46. It was shipped to East Northport, NY on April 1, 1974. It was fitted with extra equipment: two painter rings in deck(s), a full-length stem band, and mahogany rudder, mast seat, and step.

The canoe was returned to Old Town for repairs on May 30, 1974 – a presumably new canvas was filled on January 22, 1975; on February 25, gunwales, keel, and a full-length stem band were fitted, and on March 12, 1975, an entry was made concerning a mast seat and step, painter rings, full-length stem band, netting under seat, and 26-28 hours of labor, for which there was no charge.

(I would guess that there was serious damage when the canoe was first shipped, requiring substantial repair/replacement of the noted items, at no charge to the buyer.)

Scans of this build record and its reverse side can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
