Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
Hello,

I am looking for the record for OT: 124173 18

Looks like an 18 ft boat with sponsons, a sailing rig and possibly a HW model?

This boat is at a camp in CT rolled under a porch and known as "The War Canoe"

They have another one as their dining hall mantel piece, looks like a canoe alter, it's in great shape, they are going to send me the serial number some time so they can get some info on their camp relics

Thank you!

Finally bought a membership too!

Good guess. The Old Town canoe with serial number 124173 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, a floor rack, sponsons, mast seat, mast step, and a rudder. It was built between January and July, 1938. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 29th, 1939 to Stafford Springs, Conn. The back side of the record indicates that it had a problem with paint blisters and materials were sent to refinish it. There was a previous request for a copy of this build record in October, 1973 from East Hartford, Conn. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks for joining, and welcome to the fold!

The record for Old Town 124173 matches your description-- it's an 18 foot AA (top) grade HW model canoe that was factory-fitted for sailing with sponsons, a rudder, and a mast seat and step. It was completed January to July of 1938, and has mahogany open gunwales and mahogany decks, thwarts and seat frames. It also has a keel and floor rack, and was originally dark green. A note on the back of the card indicates a problem with the finish-- appears there was blistering. The canoe was shipped to GH Baker Co. on July 29, 1938. An inquiry was made by someone in East Hartford in 1973.Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.
