Old Town

Can you provide a picture of the serial numbers from both stems? The Old Town build record for serial number 161178 shows a 15 foot long lapstrake outboard and 161173 shows a 12 foot long sport boat so neither of those are a good match for an 18 foot long canoe. Thanks,

Benson

OK I'll have to check better. I don't know if a photo will help. Hard to read it's not stamped very well. Dave

My guess is that you may have the Old Town canoe with serial number 61178. This is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between May and June, 1920. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 8th, 1920 to Leland, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

That sounds correct Benson, Thanks. The only thing is ALL of the seats, thwarts , decks and gunwales have been replaced with Philipine mahogany. So far, I'm 95% sure their replacements. I don't think they used Philipine mahogany in 1950 . Though they did a nice job. I'll know more when I take things apart. Dave

Pictures can help with this too. A CS grade canoe would not have had any mahogany.
