Old Town Ss Search

Hello:
I am new here, and have an Old Town canoe, 18' sponsons. I am looking for information on it.
The canoe was given to my by my Grand Father a long time ago, and am now in a position to restore it.
I think it is an early 1920's, the number, best as I can tell is 72485 18.
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Bob

Welcome and congratulations. The build record for the Old Town canoe with serial number 72485 was very poorly scanned. It appears to show an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between June and July, 1922. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 20th, 1922 to Binghamton, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Canoes with a family history are always extra special. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions.

Hi again:
Thanks for the information, that is great. Are there any places in the northeast, well I am in NY that do a restoration on her.
At this time I do not have the dedicated room to do the work, but have done a lot of word working in the past.

I stopped by the factory last week and got a better image of this build record as shown below. Good luck selecting a restorer,

Benson
