I inherited this from my Uncle in New York. I would like to know how old it is, when and where it was made, and possibly what it may be worth... THANK YOU !!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 152864 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, square stern model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, a 48 inch deck, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between May and June, 1949. The original exterior paint colors were fire red with G. S. (Guide Special) green on the bottom. It was made in Old Town, Maine and shipped on June, 24th, 1949 to Ticonderoga, New York. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match. The pricing information at the link below was written for canoes with two pointed ends but most of the principles will apply. Canoes with transoms often sell for less. The archive of similar ones that have been listed in the classifieds at https://wcha.org/classified-archive/Old-Town-Square-Stern.html may help. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions. Good luck with the decision,

Benson

THANK YOU Mr. Gray !!! My family and I certainly do appreciate this valuable information you have provided for us . My uncle was the original purchaser of this canoe. He lived in the town of Hague on Lake George...Hague is just a short distance south of Ticonderoga. We hve pictures of him in the canoe, on the lake. Thank you again !
