Old Town Serial Search 128431

Old Town serial number 128431 was assigned to a 17-foot CS grade (or common sense) HW model that was shipped in 1940 to the Boy Scouts in Ottumwa, Iowa. It had open spruce gunwales and birch thwarts, seats, and decks. The original color was dark green.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

If you are selling your canoe and plan to use this build record information as part of an ad, please consider giving the WCHA credit for this information on eBay or craigslist or wherever your canoe is listed.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you

I live in Bettendorf, Iowa....Ottumwa, IA is 100 miles SW.

The inside of the canoe was painted blue.....
A replacement canvas was glued on by a previous owner and is now off.

When the canoe season is over this will be a Fall-Winter restore project.
I have a lot of experience building strippers, but realize ribs and canvas is a real challenging skill.
Would intertain canvas job bids.

I was surprised when I learned that canoes tend not to wander far from their original homes.

There are lots of people on this forum who have written about restoring wood-and-canvas canoes, and who could help you recanvas the boat. See the supplier list at http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ and see also the store for some of those books.

Blue paint on the inside of a canoe and canvas glued to the hull are two indications that you have rescued a nice boat from inexperienced hands.

Please post pictures on these forums as you proceed. Thanks.
