I just picked up a 16' old town fiberglass canoe for $100. It floats and has no leaks, I think I did good. Was wondering what year it was manufactured and analyzing else about it that the serial number may reveal. Serial number XTC48563M83G. thanks in advance.

The information at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm describes how your hull identification number shows that it was built with a model year of February, 1983. The sequential serial number is 248563 and the build record shows this to be a 16 foot long Kennebec model made out of ABS/Oltonar/Royalex. It was built in February, 1983. The original exterior vinyl color was yellow. It was shipped on February 18th, 1983 to Ozark, Arkansas. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
