Old town serial - 201165

Hello - I just picked up a 14' (light) yellow old town canoe, which appears to be fiberglass, with molded seats, and molded gunnels. The canoe is not super light, but is oddly lighter than the Wenonah Jensen fiberglass canoe of similar length. The canoe says, Old Town, but no model name. I would appreciate if someone can help identify the make and age? Thank you.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 201165 is a 14 foot long Chipewyan model which weighed 59 pounds when it was built in April of 1974. The original exterior color was yellow. It shipped on May 3rd, 1974 to Ramsey, N. J. A copy of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The comparable fiberglass model was listed at 69 pounds in the 1974 catalog. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much Benson! The description your provide indeed matches. How can I tell whether I have a fiberglass or royalex model? I have included a screen snapshot of the serial number. Thank you.

You do not have the fiberglass one since they were identified as the Carleton models. Their Chipewyan models were made of an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS plastic. The page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylonitrile_butadiene_styrene has more details about this material. Uniroyal called it Royalex and Old Town called it Oltonar. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question. Thanks,

Hi Benson, I have what I believe to be an Old Town Canoe. Based on what I have seen on Old Town's website, my canoe most resembles the Camper model. I called Old Town Customer Service and gave them my serial number XTC94469M731 and they don't believe I can determine the age of my canoe by my serial number, and they don't think they have any records on it. They believe it may have been built at a time when they may have not been keeping complete records? I measure the length and it is 6'. The width is 36". I took it on the bathroom scale with me and it weighs 65 lbs. using that method. My canoe has minimal rocker, the sides are straight and the bottom is very flat. The seats are molded, as compared to mesh, etc. The shape appears to be symmetrical. It is medium to light green in color and some scratches on the bow reveal a gray color underneath. The bow and stern shapes look more like a Camper than a Penobscot (which is what the customer service person suggested I may have based on limited info I gave them at the time). Could it be the predecessor of the Camper, i.e., the Chipewyan? I would greatly appreciate anything you can offer in terms of identifying my canoe! Thanks and kind regards, Al Dean

I'm sorry to hear that Old Town's Customer Service department wasn't able to help you. Your XTC94469M731 is a hull identification number and the page at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm has more details about how to interpret these. This translates to the Old Town canoe with serial number 194469 which is a 16 foot long Chipewyan model that weighed 69 pounds when it was built in April of 1973. The original exterior color was avocado. It shipped on April 5th, 1973 to Hadley, Mass. The back side of the card indicates that the warranty card was returned from Buckland Mass. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. This model became known as the camper model in the 1978 catalog. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
