Hi - I'm interested in any available build info for a 1950 (?) Old Town runabout 15' 10" with ID # 154234.

Thanks in advance,
Phil

Welcome, the Old Town with serial number 154234 is a 15 foot long lapstrake outboard model boat in AA (or top) grade with 54 inch mahogany decks, a keel, an outside stem, and a floor rack. It was built in April, 1950. The original exterior was varnished clear to show the natural wood. It shipped on May 10th, 1950 to Montpelier, Vermont. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the boat. Page 26 of the 1950 catalog at the link below has more details. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

@Benson - Many thanks for the terrific archival info! And thanks @Todd F and @Worth Gretter for the encouraging comments.

Here's the only pic that I have. The boat is natural wood currently, but I haven't explored yet whether it was painted and then stripped at some point over its 74 years.

The boat isn't mine - I'm just thinking about buying it. If I don't move ahead and it's still available, I'll encourage the seller to avail himself of this terrific community. If I do buy it, I'll definitely be looking to the group for advice on my old wooden boat journey!

Thanks again,
Phil
