I am slowly working on restoring what I assume is an Old Town Otca canoe. The build number is 145749. It does have the graceful upswept decks but seems to narrow. 34 inches rather than 36. I need to confirm what the model and, if possible the original dimensions. Thank you.

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 145749 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Otca model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between June and August, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on August 29th, 1948 to Spokane, Washington. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Page five of the 1946 Old Town catalog at https://solocanoes.com/flip/old-town-1946/ lists the width as 34 1/2 inches. The page at https://woodencanoemuseum.org/builder-history/old-town-canoe-company explains how the Otca decks and width changed in 1957. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
