Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have heard that posting to this forum will produce the build record for the subject serial number, a canoe that my father was and I am very fond of. I am particularly trying to figure out if it has a fiberglass or canvas finish. Thanks, Jim Long

Ken,

If you don't mind, I will step in for Dan.

This 17' Molitor was shipped on 2/1/1966, destination unknown, but featured 2 3/4" planking, outside stems, keel, mast seat & step, rudder package and the original color was design #46. The canoe was returned on 4/17/1967 for problems. It was finally resold on 7/11/1967 and shipped to Collegeville, PA.

Build records are attached.

If not already a member, please consider joining the WCHA to help support this and other services which have been provided by substantial grants and volunteer time.

Enjoy,

Jim,

Not sure why my reply to Ken is posted here but just ignore it. The question you ask about your canoe I cannot answer because our records only go up to SN 210000. The chances are that it is glass but when Benson sees this, he can probably help further.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 218242 is a 17 foot long Otca model with fiberglass in place of canvas and a keel. It was built between June and September, 1977. The original exterior paint color was red. It shipped on June 6th, 1979 to Fort Wayne, Indiana. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

Several hundred thousand scans like this were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Good luck with the rest of your auction at http://cgi.ebay.com/_W0QQitemZ110031872273 on eBay. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Thanks!

Thank you all for helping get the build record for my father's canoe! I have joined WCHA a look forward to the canoe info and lore. Jim

Mike, "fond of" was a poor choice of words on my part. I should have said "have fond memories of." I am selling the canoe for my mom, who is no longer all that able to ride in or paddle the canoe. The canoe is some distance away from my home and it would take a fairly major rearranging of stuff in my pole barn to make it canoe-friendly. I must say, however, it is my eBay listing of the canoe that acquainted me with WCHA, and I have found the extraordinarily fine Web site very engaging. I may just have to add "vintage wood canoes" to my life-long hobbies of audio, music, photography and riding a bike on Southwestern Michigan country roads. Jim

Jim - WARNING - Vintage canoes is an addicting hobby! Welcome to WCHA and you should look around a bit - we have many talented and dedicated members in the Michigan area.
