Old town Closed Gunwales 16

LOVES Wooden Canoes
Looking for an id on OT 489(66) The last two are very difficult to read. It is a 16 footer with closed gunwales, a mast seat and step. The canoe is not in my possession, but will be in a couple of weeks. The 489 _ _ 16 is clear.

Thanks for any help.

Old Town 48966 is a 16 foot CS grade HW model canoe finished March to May of 1917. It has red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, maple decks, thwarts and seat frames and a keel. It was pained dark green and shipped to Warren, PA, June 29, 1917.

Does this fit what you're seeing? If not, we can keep looking. No mention of mast seat/step on this one, but that could have been a later addition.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. Kathy,

Thanks. That could be it. I have a couple of photos....not great ones, but the thwarts, seats, and decks look to be a light wood. Could be maple. It is dark green, but the owner says some ribs have been replaced years ago so it is unlikely that it is the original canvas.

Once I get it down here, I will take some photos and attatch them to this thread.

Can we try 48960, 48965, and 48969'

Should have a delivery area near Long Island Harbor

Thanks!

Old Town 48960 is a 16 foot Ideal model canoe-- this is a tricked-out Charles River with mahogany trim, open gunwales and half-ribs and is probably not what you have...

48965 is a 16 foot CS grade HW model with closed spruce gunwales that was shipped to South Beach Connecticut 5-31-1917...

48969 is a 15' CS grade 50 pounder...

Does the one in the middle fit what you're seeing, or should we keep working on it?

I am betting on the middle one. It is from a beach in CT...which puts it a lot closer to Long Island Sound...than any of the others.

Thanks for all the legwork!

Attached is the build record-- already posted the information on the OT records project above.

48965 is a 16 foot, CS grade HW model canoe with red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, and birch decks/thwarts/seat frames. It has a keel and was originally painted orange... then was shipped to South Beach, Connecticut, on 5-31-1917.

Glad to help locate the right record for this canoe!

Kathy
