Hi there I’m new to the forum and I’m trying to get a date and model of a used Old Town Canoe I just bought. The number stamped into the plastic is 216828. The number on a plate is XTC15328431A. I was told it was Royalex Pathfinder from1980. Thanks in advance.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 216828 and hull identification number XTC16828M81A is an 15 foot long Chipewyan Pathfinder model that weighed 65 pounds with aluminum inserts in the rails. It was built in March 1977. The original exterior color was avocado. It shipped on August 20th, 1980 to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The back side indicates that it had some scratches on the inside along with skuffs and scratches on the outside of the hull on the bottom. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you so very much! I wasn’t sure which number was the serial number. The one has a bunch of letters in it.

This will help me tremendously trying to restore the seats and portage yoke. It also needs a skid plate to cover where it was dragged

tbonebell, skid plates are easy to do, but be sure you get bias tape instead of plain fabric. That way it will follow the curve easily. Check out West Systems (Gogeon Brothers) or Jamestown Distributors for epoxy and good advice on doing it.
That canoe is well worth fixing!

You can make regular fabric work, but it won't follow the curve of the stem unless you cut it on a bias, i.e. diagonally. So you will waste a couple yards of fabric just to get a thin strip. And Kevlar is really hard to cut.
G-flex is a good product, but I would visit the West Systems (Gougeon Brothers) website to make sure 650 is the right one.
