I have inherited this canoe which has been in the family since 1957. I would very much like to hear anything about its history prior to that date.

Thanks all,
John

The Old Town canoe with serial number 130729 is an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between October, 1940 and 1941. The original exterior paint color was probably dark green. It was shipped on May 14th, 1941 to Chicago, Illinois. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. It is great to have a canoe with a family history. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks!

Thanks very much for the information.

The information indicates the original color was green. However, when my family purchased the canoe in 1957 it had the Old Town paint scheme with the upper portion white and the lower portion blue with a gold stripe separating the colors. I assume this was done at the factory.

Cheers,
John
