Curious about Wooden Canoes
Help!

I have an old town canoe with the #83080 stamped on the keel. It is 17' and has been recanvased and is a really beautiful boat. This is my first visit to this website and am very impressed. If there is a membership I will join. Any help on the request will be appreciated.

Hi Barry,

The canoe's birthday is coming up-- 87 years old. It's a very cool thing to paddle a beautiful old canoe. Old Town 83080 is a 17 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Charles River model canoe, with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, and birch seat frames. Original color was dark green. It was shipped to what appears to be Percy Coos Cove, New Hampshire, on June 10, 1924.

Glad you found this site. I think you'll find a very friendly bunch here, and in-person if you live near any of our WCHA chapters. We love seeing pictures of other people's canoes, so feel free to share! The record for this canoe is attached-- click on it for a larger image. If you join WCHA, you'll be helping to make projects like the build record project happen!

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.
