This was my father's canoe and I am going to restore it.
I would like to find out how old it is etc. It is in beautiful shape but does need canvas work.
Anything you could tell me would be great.
Thanks,
Bampy
The Old Town canoe with serial number 174039 is a 16 foot long Otca model with narrow two and 3/4 inch planking, sponsons, and a keel. It was built between June and November, 1964. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 24th, 1965 to South Portland, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,
Thank you.
That makes perfect sense as we are in Maine. She has sponsons and is definitely an Old Town
I now need to find someone to re-canvas her. Any suggestions?
You might also want to check the Local Chapters listing, in case there's someone hear you who might help you do it yourself! http://www.wcha.org/local-area-chapters/
Thanks Paul.
I just checked on the previous owner and his company was the oldest boston whaler dealer and a large retailer of Chris Craft boats.
No wonder the thing is in great shape.
Thanks for the links
