Old Town canoe 117951

The Old Town canoe with serial number 117951 is a 16 foot long, CS grade, Yankee model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak trim, and a keel. It was built between May and July, 1936. The original exterior paint color was maroon. It shipped on August 8th, 1936 to Bangor, Maine. The back side of the card indicates that it came back for repairs in May, 1939. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Good morning,
117951 was assigned to a 16' Yankee in CS grade with open spruce gunwales, white cedar ribs, western red cedar planking, oak seats, decks and thwarts. It had a keel installed and was originally painted maroon. It was shipped to Bangor, ME in August of 1936. This canoe was returned to Old Town in May of 1939 for repair. It was refilled, a new middle thwart was installed and it was painted Dark Green. A copy of the build record is attached.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

Welcome to the WCHA Lowell and sorry about the duplication Mike. The top level page at http://forums.wcha.org/ only listed canoenut and me in the "Currently Active Users" section when I started my response so I figured it would not be a duplication of effort. Oh well,

Benson

I was probably typing my response very slowly at 7:00am. Probably didn't qualify as active!

Thank you Mike for your response, as well. This will be my first restoration. I have made a couple of bookcases from a canoe that some one made. One half I covered with canvas and the other half is left uncovered with an amber shellac finish on the outside.
