old town canoe 114351 17

Bruce,
Welcome to our forum. Canoe # 114351 is a 17' HW model in CS (Common Sense - ie. not fancy) grade. It had open spruce gunwales, oak seats, decks and thwarts and a keel. The original color was bright green. It was shipped to New York City in April of 1935. A copy of the build record is attached.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. A 10 minute video on WCHA is viewable at http://www.wcha.org/wcha_video.php. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

PS... For further reference, please post this in the Serial Number Search part of the forum. Assembly is our annual wooden canoe extravaganza where we all get together to drool on boats, learn some stuff and enjoy a beverage or two. Not a serious problem, just helps us keep things organized.

Mike thanks for responding to my inquiry. I must say as a new member
to WCHA I am a bit overwhelmed by all the info. I am confused that this canoe is 1935 yet the topside decals look like the ones I found for 1940-50
except that they say "old town boat co." Any advice? thanks,
bruceb

Hi Bruce,

Welcome to the WCHA. My guess is that you have a decal that looks like the one in the attached image below. These were for the boats and dinghies but they occasionally got put on canoes. It was probably added by someone who did some repairs well after it originally shipped from the factory. Feel free to reply here if you have other questions or want more information. Thanks,

Benson

It is a new old-stock (N.O.S. in the automotive world) decal that was put on a new Old Town dinghy in the 1990s. The image below shows an older version with the black bar from a recent eBay listing. I do not believe that anyone has reproduced these.
