Old Town 99410

We recently bought this canoe, at auction, and I'm pretty sure from the original purchaser's family, here in CT. They said they believe their grandfather bought it at the old G. Fox & Company in Hartford. Regardless it's history, it's a lovely 17 footer, and we hope to get it up to Island Falls in the next week or so. Do you have any data on this canoe?
Thanks,
Edgar

The Old Town canoe with serial number 99410 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and a keel. It was built between September, 1928 and April, 1929. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on April 29th, 1929 to Hartford, Conn. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Fwiw

FWIW, I am working on an OTCA right now that was original sent to G. Fox, although quite a bit later - 1949.

Benson, Thanks for the quick reply, and it pretty much jibes with what I was told.
Fitz, I remember the sporting goods department at G.Fox. It's a shame we don't have any more of the good old department stores anymore. Sort of reminds me of Ralphy staring at the Red Rider BB gun in the window of that store. Brings back memories.
