Old Town 20618

Well, the Old Town with serial number 20618 is a 17 foot long canoe in CS grade that shipped to Detroit, Michigan in 1912 and the one with number 120618 is 18 feet long in GS grade that shipped to Denmark, Maine in 1937. Neither of these seem like a good match. 20613 or 126013 are no better. Carleton and Kennebec didn't issue these serial numbers. Can you provide pictures of the serial numbers and surrounding area from each end? Thanks,

Benson

Well, picked up the canoe. the serial number is either 120618 16 / or 120613 16. Having computer issues so will try to post pics tomorrow. Apparently it was at a school in western Mass as part of an outdoor program. The owners Dad worked there, when they transitioned away from wood/canvas canoes his father got one of the originals. The name of the school may be stamped in the stems. More to follow, needs work.

My guess is that you may have the Old Town canoe with serial number 120613. This is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW model with open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, and a keel. It was built between February and June, 1937. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped to South Hadley, Massachusetts on June 10th, 1937. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Your life membership is much appreciated.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

My significant other, Katie, whom some wcha people have met, went to Mount Holyoke College. They do an event called “canoe sing” on there pond in the middle of campus during graduation, and they have a boat house at their upper lake.

One year, while attending graduation we saw an old town with number 114536 parked on the shore for the event with clearly original canvas on it.

well, I have the thought of a basic restoration, adding the family Scottish crest to the canoe, and donating it to the school if they are interested.

Ryan, interesting post. "MT. HOL. COL." is stamped into the stems. Looking through what Benson added and what I have seen online so far the "Canoe Sing" looks to still be going on. Will reach out to the school to see if any of the older canoes are still there.

Todd- I’m sure someone would even give you a tour of the upper lake boat house. Mount Holyoke is its own world! Every year we go to the flower show at its old school greenhouse in March and it’s a great way to escape the end of winter blues in New England.

The canoe Benson just posted the record for is in a lot of the Canoesing photos online, it’s bright yellow/orange.
