Kettle River Canoes
A client has asked me to restore his 18' Old Town -- serial number 178789. I'd like to track down the build record for this canoe as part of the service to him.

Thanks,
Mike Elliott

The Old Town with serial number 178789 is an 18 foot long Guide model with thwarts and a keel. It was built between August and October, 1967. The original color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on March 7th, 1968 to Albemarle, North Carolina.

A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your client's canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Build Record Old Town 178789

Thank you Benson,

Thanks for the quick reply and all of the information. The canoe has mahogany gunwales and trim which leads me to believe it is an A.A. grade canoe. In any case, I appreciate your time and effort tracking this down. I'll forward all this on to my client.

Cheers,

Mike Elliott

The canoe has mahogany gunwales and trim which leads me to believe it is an A.A. grade canoe.

The grades were discontinued in the 1950s so all of the canoes of this vintage typically had spruce inside gunwales and mahogany outside gunwales. More information is available from the Old Town Canoe catalog CD which can be purchased from the WCHA store. Good luck with your restoration.
